# Custom Software Development

Murarum's product development service is custom software development: we design and build platforms, web and mobile applications and design systems for scaling companies and funded B2B teams in Romania and the EU, as a nearshore team. Senior engineers own the work from architecture to release, and every product ships production-grade with documentation your team can run.

Illustrative example: a product built in increments. Working software every week, reviewed in a demo, then released and handed over with code and documentation.

When this fits

## Where a roadmap stalls.

### Hiring is slow

The roadmap has a date and the team does not exist yet. A senior engineer takes months to find and more to become productive. Meanwhile the product promise is already public.

### Agencies over-scope

Every conversation grows the estimate: discovery phases, workshops, a proposal thicker than the product. You need the thing built, not described.

### Freelancers vanish

The first sprint goes well. Then availability slips, the architecture lives in one person's head, and no one is accountable when it breaks.

Specific solutions

## When the problem is this specific.

[Customer Portals](https://murarum.ro/en/services/product-development/customer-portals): Customers order, request quotes, pay and book on their own, connected to your ERP.

How it runs

## Four steps, each with an output.

1. ### Problem definition and scope
We start with what the product must do and for whom, then cut the scope to the first version that proves it. Nothing is built before this is written down.
Output: a scoped brief with priorities, constraints and a release plan.
2. ### Architecture and design system
We choose the stack for the life of the product, not for the demo, and set up the design system the product will grow inside.
Output: architecture decisions, data model, design system foundations.
3. ### Build in increments, with weekly demos
The product takes shape in front of you. Every week you see working software, not a status report, and priorities can move while the cost of moving them is low.
Output: working increments on a staging environment, reviewed every week.
4. ### Hand-off to your team, or a continued partnership
At release your team receives the code, the documentation and the runbooks. Some clients take it from there. Others keep us on for the next roadmap.
Output: a production release, documentation, and a team that can run it.

Stack

## A proven stack, chosen for the product’s life

React and Next.js on the web, React Native with Expo or Flutter on mobile, Node.js and PostgreSQL underneath, TypeScript wherever it fits. Tools we run in production ourselves.

Proof

## Complex products, delivered ready to use.

For the World Health Organization we built WHO LENA with Hungry Bytes, a mobile application that guides doctors through hard conversations with patients, live on the App Store since 2021\. For Sunday, a branded merchandise platform, we rebuilt teamsunday.com in Next.js, in five languages. For ExproSov and Georgescu & Gonț we designed and built the sites their reputations rest on.

We name clients only with their clearance and publish figures only once they are confirmed.

## Questions about custom software development

### When is custom software the right choice over an off-the-shelf tool?

When the product is the business, or when the workflow is the advantage. If an existing tool covers most of the need, we say so and help you configure it. Custom makes sense when the part it does not cover is where the money or the differentiation sits, or when the tool would force the company to work its way instead of yours.

### How long does a product development engagement take?

It depends on scope and integrations, so we set the duration once the problem and the first version are defined and write it into the proposal. Problem definition and scope come first and take days, not months. After release, work continues in increments: a new roadmap, a hand-off, or both.

### Can you take over a project another vendor started?

Yes, after a diagnosis of the existing code. We read the repository, the architecture and the open issues, and tell you plainly what can be kept, what needs fixing and what it costs to carry on. Only then do we agree on the next steps.

### Who owns the code?

You do. From the first commit, the repository, the infrastructure accounts and the documentation are in your name. There are no licences owed to us, no retained rights and no lock-in.

### How do you hand off to our team?

Hand-off is planned from the first week, not improvised at the end. Your team receives the repository, technical documentation, runbooks and the record of architecture decisions, plus walkthrough sessions and an agreed support period. If you have no team yet, we stay on until you do.

### Which stacks do you work in?

TypeScript across the stack: React and Next.js for web frontends, Node.js for APIs and services, PostgreSQL for data, and React Native with Expo or Flutter for mobile, one codebase for iOS and Android. We choose per product and say so when something else fits better.

### You are a small studio. Can you take on a product our size?

Each product gets the senior people it needs, and they are the people who design and build it, with no junior team behind the pitch. The WHO LENA app, built with Hungry Bytes, is on the App Store, and the Eventer.NET platform runs in production. If a product needs more capacity than we can carry, we tell you in the first conversation, before you spend anything.
